Global Analysis on Manifolds

The conference is focused on research topics related to the scientific work of Christian Bär, and takes place in Freiburg, Germany, shortly after his 60th birthday.

Start: Monday, 19/09/2022 08:30 am
End: Friday, 23/09/2022 02:00 pm

Modern advances in geometric group theory

The focus of this workshop is modern advances in the study of infinite groups, under a variety of contexts, many of them related to topology. There is a long history of interaction between groups, geometry, and topology (e.g. Dehn's problems on finitely presented groups) going up to the present day (e.g. use of cubulated groups in Agol's Breakthrough Prize work on 3-manifolds). There have been further advances and new ideas recently in the study of homeomorphism groups, mapping class groups, one-relator groups, right-angled Artin groups, random groups, and the concept of finding "fibrings" of groups, to name just a few. The goal is to bring together experts to explain their work, and then try to use their new methods in neighbouring areas. By doing this we can accelerate the development of new mathematics, and work on solving problems using state of the art techniques.

Minimal surfaces in symmetric spaces and Labourie’s conjecture

The school will focus on minimal surfaces in symmetric spaces, and more specifically on Labourie’s conjecture. The participants (between 20 and 25 participants) will be graduate students, post-docs and young faculty. Following an Arbeitsgemeinschaft format, most of the participants will give a 2-3 hours talk. The organisers will assign the topics and give the necessary references to guide the content of the lectures.

Continuing a growing tradition, we are happy to announce the X Bavarian Geometry and Topology Meeting!

Geometric structures, compactifications and group actions

The unifying background of the meeting will be rigid differential-geometric structures, such as conformal and projective structures. This refers both to structures locally modelled on homogeneous spaces and to their curved analogues. One topic will be applications of Cartan connections to locally homogeneous structures, their moduli spaces, and compactifications. A related topic will be conformal compactifications such as Poincare-Einstein manifolds, and analogues for other ambient geometries. Another topic will be group actions preserving such structures and their rigidity.

End: Friday, 01/07/2022 04:30 pm

Dirac Operators in Topology, Geometry, and Representation Theory

The intention of this workshop is to explore the fundamental role of Dirac operators, in particular their index theory and their spectral theory, in a variety of areas of Mathematics, including topology, Riemannian, Lorentzian and symplectic geometry, foliations, and representation theory. The goal is to promote this central role of Dirac operators and to employ it in order to foster the interaction between mathematicians in different areas. The meeting will promote new collaborations amongst people working in different fields, but with a common theme and angle of attack.
